We should all consider ourselves lucky that Chuck Ragan has packaged his blend of stripped-down roots rock in Till Midnight just in time for a season change.

On his fourth solo effort, the raspy voiced troubadour attacks these 10 songs with the same energy and relentlessness that put his first band – hardcore punk darlings Hot Water Music – on the map. There are a few more love songs on this one, but they’re Chuck Ragan love songs, so you know there’s still going to be plenty of road references and whiskey howling.

“She said lay down, we only have till midnight/To leave this town and wonder far from home,” Ragan sings on the opener “Something May Catch Fire.” Longtime collaborators Jon Gaunt (fiddle) and Joe Ginsberg (bass) are joined by Todd Beane (guitarist, pedal steel player) and new drummer David Hidalgo Jr. (formerly of Social Distortion and son of Los Lobos drummer David Hidalgo) to form the Camaraderie, and they pluck and pound away on this first number. The album then kicks into “Vagabond,” a down-and-out tune about life on the road and “waking up on the wrong side of fantasy.” The track features a few of Ragan’s friends from his Revival Tour such as Lucero’s Ben Nichols, Jon Snodgrass and Chad Price. Philly’s own Dave Hause also joins Ragan for the frantic rocker “Revved” and the pounding “Gave My Heart Out.” And on “Non Typical” the splendid Jenny O joins in, trying to cool down Ragan’s fiery delivery for the chorus: “I need you like I need all my blood and my breathe.”

“Wake with You” is the lone soft song on the album, while “For All We Care” shimmers with an acoustic intro and Ragan restraining his voice, only to let it loose when the epic Mumford & Sons-like drop hits.

“Did you ever wonder far from home?” Ragan challenges on “Bedroll Lullaby.” “Far from what is safe and comfortable?” Much of Till Midnight is embodied in those questions. And I’m sure the answers will come a little easier when you’re watching a spring day expire from your porch with Chuck Ragan and company.
