For Aska Matsumiya the Japan-born, Los Angeles-based composer and songwriter, her self-titled debut EP is the culmination of years of experience but also the beginning of something new and exciting. It will be released on March 29 via Manimal Records, check out the track “I’m a Hunter”.

The classically trained pianist began going to punk shows at the age of 16, broadening her musical horizons. ASKA see’s the benefits of being classically trained, stating, “I am able to express what I feel in a more expanded way.” The EP was compiled with the help of Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Money Mark, Butchy Fuego (Pit er Pat), Kitty Jensen and Nick Dewitt (Pretty Girls Make Graves).

This is not the only music we’ll see from ASKA this year. The artist also has plans to drop a full length album by the end of 2011. The full length is said to be a more intimate collection closer to ASKA’s better-known work.
