It’s time once again for everyone’s favorite ripoff of a certain college basketball tournament with a trademarked name! Y-Not Radio‘s Modern Rock Madness kicks off tomorrow (3/30) at 9am! The annual competition traces its lineage all the way back to seminal Modern Rock station WDRE in the mid-90s, and by our calculations, that makes this year’s tournament technically the 20th edition! (If memory serves us, Bush were the original champs, but please don’t hold that against us. And as Nelson Muntz once said, “Records from that era are spotty at best.”)
In 2014, Yeah Yeah Yeahs were the big winner, defeating David Bowie in the finals, which made the Thin White Duke the bridesmaid for two years in a row (he lost to Tegan & Sara in 2013). They will face Two Door Cinema Club in the first round of Modern Rock Madness, but not until Tuesday morning. For now let’s look at the left side of the bracket, which will run from 9am-5pm tomorrow.
#1 seed Jack White and his many other musical projects will kick off the morning, with a match-up against Brit-rock trio The Wombats. The reunited Sleater-Kinney is a staff pick to go far in the tournament this year, but the trio has to get past longtime fave Ben Folds (and his Five) at 9:30am. One of the biggest Rock bands in the world, Foo Fighters, is up next against The National at 10am. To continue his winning ways of the past few years, Bowie must defeated the hottest Philadelphia band around, The War On Drugs, at 10:30am. Muse just announced their new album Drones, and will take on Belle & Sebastian, who also have a new 2015 album, at 11am. At 11:30am, two staples of Modern Rock Madness meet each other: Nine Inch Nails and Cake. The Shins/Broken Bells go up against My Morning Jacket at high noon. The first quarter of the bracket winds up at 12:30pm when Vampire Weekend meets tUnE-yArDs.
The next bracket begins with another #1 seed, Radiohead, who made it to the Fantastic Four last year. They will face off against They Might Be Giants at 1pm. Passion Pit take on Punk icons the Ramones at 1:30pm followed by Beastie Boys vs. Franz Ferdinand at 2pm. Our 2013 champs Tegan & Sara face Oasis at 2:30pm, then it’s The Clash vs. Alt-J at 3pm. Spoon is another band that could go very far this year, and they face Phantogram at 3:30pm. The final two match-ups of the day pit Modern Rock Madness mainstays The Cure against Queens of the Stone Age at 4pm and the first day wraps up with Blur/Gorillaz/all things Damon Albarn against Cold War Kids at 4:30pm.
