WHERE: The Chameleon Club – Lancaster, PA

WHEN: 7/13/12

It was thrilling to hear Cabinet say they felt welcome and lucky to be playing Chameleon Club, Lancaster, PA Friday the 13th of July.  I joined 300+ other fans in letting them feel our appreciation and shared sense of luck that night.  Cabinet was opening for recent Tonight Show guests Delta Rae.  I don’t know how many folks there that night had come to see Delta Rae but I do know a bus load drove in from Scranton to see Cabinet in this venerable institution.

As openers, Cabinet only had a 75-minute set.  They fit in nine songs and a beautiful a cappella, old-timey sounding song called “This Ol’ Moonshine.” Other fan favorites that night included “Old Farmer’s Mill,” “Pennsylvania,” “Caroline,” “Coal Miners,” and “Tower.”  There was only one song where the fellas really stretched out and soared into some of their trademark extended jams. It clocked at just over thirteen minutes.

They call themselves a bluegrass band.  The first line of their website bio reads, “When it comes to the music of Cabinet, the essential bywords are soul, simplicity and serious musicianship.”  I call them a bluegrass/newgrass/country-rock/jazz fusion band.  One minute, you are stomping your feet.  You start clapping and hollering as the guitar, mandolin and banjo tickle every toe.  Mickey Coviello and cousins J.P. and Pappy Biondo can pick their respective instruments with the best performers today.  Then you’re whirling, dancing, by-God flying on these soaring melodies by Todd Kopec on fiddle.  You only realize the gravity of bassist Dylan Skursky and drummer Jami Novak when they keep you from leaving orbit and keep the band firmly tethered to terra firma.  This band is out of this world.  Seeing them live is transcendent.

Three of Cabinet’s four album releases have been live recordings.  Most recent and noteworthy is their new DVD  Cabinet Eleven, recorded on 11/11/11 at The Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company in Harrisburg, PA and released this past April. There is no bad place to see Cabinet and you’re in luck.  They are touring PA, VA, TN, FL and NJ this summer and playing several big festivals like Musikfest, The Peach, Bear’s Picnic and Philly Folk Fest!
