March 29th at the TLA marked the Philly leg of Girl in a Coma’s tour with Company of Thieves. A stroke of luck gave me the chance to witness this hard rocking San Antonio based group!

Girl in a Coma is Nina Diaz on vocals, sister Phanie Diaz on bass and the Diaz sister’s high-school friend Jenn Alva on drums. I’ve heard that they were signed to Blackheart Records, (yes, thee Blackheart Records founded by Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna), so I knew Girl in a Coma would have to boast a high level of talent. And of course Joan Jett, who has never let me down, was 100% correct.

With a stage stage presence that can’t be matched by any group, male or female, the level of raw energy Girl in a Coma put out was unreal. Being down front in the photography pit, I got an up close and personal look at the passion they put into every word. All tatted up and performing songs from their new CD Exits and All The Rest the band transported me back to the early days of rock and roll.

When they began with “One Eyed Fool”I could sense a tad bit of nervous energy, due to the crowds unfamiliarity with them. But when they finished their rocking version of Patsy Cline’s “Walking after Midnight” the nervousness was gone! From that point up to the last note of “Ven Cerca,” which is done completely in Spanish, they had the crowd in a frenzy!

Don’t miss Girl in a Coma as they wrap up their North American tour. Find dates here.
