The last Radio 104.5 Summer Block Party of the season took place on a drenched Festival Pier last Saturday. Diehard fans of the line-up secured the front rows early, waiting in the crowd with their umbrellas shielding them from the storm, while the partiers kept their big beers dry under a large canopy in the back. All music lovers eventually migrated to the wet sand of the Pier to enjoy the sold-out show.
Brick + Mortar, no stranger to the east coast weather, opened with “Heatstroke” and embraced the storm. Lead singer Brandon Asraf shouted fitting lyrics like “since I was a young child, I seemed to like the rain” with a wide grin on his face. Toward the end of their set, the rain cleared up and the crowd filled in.
Wolfgang, a British alternative band on tour currently opening for Sir Sly, kept the energy high as the weather continued to clear. The rain had completely ceased by the time Sir Sly took the stage to give one of the top performances from the day. Sir Sly frontman Landon Jacobs won the crowd over with an Allen Iverson jersey and a few athletic feats of speaker climbing while belting out some of their recent hits, including “Ghost” and “Gold”.
Rounding off the openers for the day, Vance Joy charmed his way through a somber set of songs before pumping up the crowd with his hit, “Riptide.” I think a few in the crowd may have been yawning between the set changes but most of the fans were excited for Grouplove despite the delays.
Grouplove woke everyone up with a healthy mix of strobe lights, sparkling onesies, and sing-a-longs. Grouplove’s upbeat and passionate performance proved to be an appropriate closing to the 2014 Summer Block Party season.
