DJ Abilities Throws Down at Kung Fu Necktie - Philly, PA

Chances are that you were not at Kung Fu Necktie this last Sunday night to see DJ Abilities show off his stuff. But you should have been. For the few of us that showed, what a treat it was. DJ Abilities, former DJ for the late Eyedea (RIP) is on tour right now, and unfortunately you missed his stop in Philly, but if you have a chance to catch him somewhere else around the country, you should not miss out on this opportunity.
Though previously known for his production for artists such as Eyedea, Atmosphere, and I Self Divine, DJ Abilities is now focusing more on his spinning, even releasing a brand new mixtape entitled “Now That’s What I Call Fuck Off.” The cover image of the mixtape, a picture of Abilities shaving his long time goatee, may at first seem to have a deeper meaning, a change in personality, music or philosophy, but I caught up with him after his show and he told me that wasn’t the case. Instead, saying simply, “It was all last minute. That picture came out and it just seemed to be the most ‘Fuck Off’ picture there.”
Touche.
I asked him about his latest mixtape, and what sparked it, Abilities simply said, “I just wanted to make somethin’ that guys would think, ya know, that shit’s dope, and girls could dance around to.”
He pretty much nailed it then. His mixtape has enough old school hip-hop mixed in with new school electronic music to be considered a timeline of dance/club music… not to mention some ridiculous scratching skill.
A man of few words, he’s still stoked to be working with a group like Rhymesayers and has been with them since the late 90’s. The biggest difference between then and now? Simply, “Now, we’re more successful.”
Finally… Best part about being DJ Abilities? “I’m happy,” he says.
Fair enough, man. Fair enough.
