WHO: Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros
WHERE: Tower Theater – Philadelphia, PA
WHEN: May 11, 2012
Although TSI has been following Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros for some time, I had never had the chance to get the full live experience. Arriving at the Tower in Upper Darby and seeing the diverse crowd, I sensed this was a band with wide appeal. I soon found out why. I had heard their music, and their hit song “Home” in particular, but never really paid attention. That was stupid. Cause these guys were thrilling from their first moment on stage.
A very physical bunch, especially the lead singers. Interesting to look at and even more interesting to listen to. A dozen on stage the sound was huge. Many part harmonies, a couple keyboards, drum sets, and guitars. Plus bass, accordion, fiddle, other percussion things, it got crazy.
The sound ranged from bluesy to folky to country, and often with spiritual or gospel overtones. Carnival sounding at times, always moving, mostly happy, or even exuberant. Totally awesome. So enjoy the photos, check out their latest album on iTunes, or some of the many videos on YouTube or our previous coverage of Edward Sharpe on TSI.
