Quartet Tarmac Adam, the project of Melbourne, Australia-based singer-songwriter Matt O’Donnell and multi-instrumentalist Steve Paix along with Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour, released their new music video for their song “Giving It Back” today.

The song comes from their recently-released US debut, The History Effect, and is a dreamy, pleasant song with a somewhat psychedelic tone to it. The video follows suit with the psychedelia, featuring the band members in black and white on solid black backgrounds while brightly colored eyes, flowers, butterflies, and ears fly in and out of the picture in a kaleidoscopic fashion.

Check it out,

Mickey Hart (of the Grateful Dead) will be performing at the World Cafe Live in Wilmington Delaware tomorrow along with his band and with special guests The African Showboyz.

The show will feature brand new material from the Mickey Hart Band’s new album Mysterium Tremendum, as well as selections of Hart’s greatest hits and Grateful Dead songs.

The band is currently in the studio working on the follow up to Mysterium Tremendum. The Worlds Within Tour has provided great opportunity for the band to test out new material, including songs co-written by Hart and Robert Hunter. “We have traversed the macro, the stars, the planets, now we journey into the micro,” says Hart. “This band is truly a living, breathing organism.”

The Mickey Hart Band recently released three free live tracks from their 3/6/13 Solana Beach, CA show including the brand new song, “The Sermon” featuring lyrics by Robert Hunter. “The Sermon“, along with Grateful Dead classics “Ramble On Rose” and “Playing in the Band”, is available here.

The African Showboyz are four brothers from the northern part of Ghana who fuse a unique blend of West African rhythm, dance, and raw energy.

100% of the ticketing fees sold through Mickeyhart.net will go to fund Musical Therapy Research at UCSF.

London’s Palma Violets played Johnny Brenda’s on Wednesday night to a packed audience of enthusiastic followers. Their single “Best Friends” had been voted song of the year for 2012 by the NME and their recent South By Southwest Showcase had garnered them a good amount of notoriety, so there seemed to be a nice level of hype and support leading up to the show.

Openers, The Orwells, started off the night on an upbeat note. Lead singer Mario Cuomo swayed back and forth as if in a stupor, evoking an Ariel Pink vibe, if Ariel had been playing a sock hop, instead of an indie rock show in 2013.

Palma Violets were similarly upbeat, keeping the energy level high with their brand of English post-punk. This band had come highly recommended to me from someone who had been listening to them online for a while. This fact, however, made me wonder, as they hit the stage, if I was missing the thing that made them magic, by seeing them live first. Their sound was sloppy and loose, as it should be for their genre. But aside from the energy and crowd interaction, I couldn’t quite figure out what distinguished them from other English bands with a similar sound, like, say….The Libertines. While the Libertines have one of the most lyrically blessed front-men in all of rock, the lyrics of the Palma Violets were indecipherable in this type of setting. I grant the possibility that I may have bypassed their main attraction. I don’t know.

Their hype man, who came in the form of a drunken friend, brought along to handle their merch table, was one of the evening’s highlights to me, as he went from corner to corner of the room berating the audience at the top of his lungs, for being “not into it enough” (which was untrue). In any event, being yelled at by an English drunk and feeling threatened that he might actually fight you at any moment, really just made for greater authenticity, one might argue.

Time will tell if the Palma Violets prove to live up their early hype or simply look and sound the part of what we expect a British indie rock band to be.

Allegedly, while performing in Minnesota back in April (that’s right, two weeks ago and it’s still somehow a big deal) a female fan somehow rushed the stage and proceeded to perform oral sex on Danny Brown in the middle of his performance. Rather than stop, he continued his performance. Yet, somehow that’s not the story. The story has now become a letter by Kitty Pryde, his opener on this tour, and a couple of Huffington Post pieces written to or about the female perpetrator involved in DBBJgate (the one to which I have included a link is by far one of the worst, most ignorant, and borderline racist pieces of “satire” I’ve ever read).

I can honestly say that I don’t care. To put it bluntly, shit happens while on tour, but for some reason, because it’s Danny Brown, it’s a big deal.

Though hip hop artists have been rapping about drugs sex and violence for decades, the style in which Danny Brown does it raises eyebrows. Perhaps it’s his unconventional quasi-hipster chic fashion style. Perhaps it’s his raw, electrifying, yet somewhat simplistic beats. Or, it could also be the frequency and course nature of his drug and sex heavy rhymes. Whatever it is, something just seems to rub critics and fans of hip hop and music in general the wrong way.

That’s all background.

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Danny Brown’s first headlining show in Philadelphia. He said it best himself when he said it was unfortunate for anyone who had come to see a rap show. This, he declared, was a party. And party we did. He had some bangers like Radio Song, Witit, Bruiser Brigade, Monopoly, and Lie4 along with some new tracks off his upcoming album “Old.” Danny Brown’s raucous stage presence encouraged an almost riotous crowd, to chant his big lines and choruses (where applicable) and fun was had by all. Just the way it should be. No drama; just music and good times.

Notes:

1. Hipsters are really bad, but Hip Hop Hipsters are the worst.

2. Any guy who wears flip flops is walking a thin line, except at a rap concert, at which point you’ve not crossed the line, but pole vaulted over it.

3. A Danny Brown show is not a good place to find a future wife. Not that the quality is poor (it’s great, actually), but that there were maybe 30 ladies there, in a crowd of nearly 1,000.

4. Though never required I guess… It’s pretty much expected to give an encore performance of at least one song. When you don’t, you leave the crowd on a bad note. I understand if the crowd was unappreciative, but Danny Brown even tweeted about how it was one of the best nights of his tour, so a little gratification would’ve gone a long way.

A packed house of dark jeans and black tees filled the Theater of the Living Arts last Sunday waiting in anticipation for Black Rebel Motorcycle Club to take the stage. An eager audience swayed and chanted till the venue went dark and a slow groan of a guitar went over the sound system. BRMC took the stage to an eerie intro and turned the crowd upside down with Let the Day Begin.

The first three songs set the tone for the night….Let the Day Begin, Rival and Red Eyes and Tears kept the mood grimy, raw and dark. The basic use of spotlights and smoke enhanced the mood with a dark silhouette of the band members. The energy was set for a night that hit you with sound straight to the bone…as if you’d expect anything less from a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show.

Through the night I overheard a variety of comments coming from the BRMC old heads claiming to only wanting to hear their old songs…to the newbie’s hoping to hear Hate The Taste. With no need to worry cause the set was already set to please all ages with a variety of songs from over the years of Black Rebel Motorcycle Clubs life span.

May 5th was a night I had marked on my calendar ever since the show was announced. I had butterflies entering the venue. I actually shook a bit before I had to shoot the show, which hasn’t happened in a long time. It felt good to get those emotions again for just going to a show.

This slow but sure rock revival has been a long time coming…the Band of Skulls, Jack Whites, Black Angels, and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (just to name a few) of this world can finally give the industry of laptop created electronic music its final push out the door and bring real emotion produced music back to the people. I know rock and roll hasn’t left. The wall of money driven music just once again needs to be cracked and brought back down. The feelings I got last Sunday confirmed to me that Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is one of the bands that can take down that wall.

Bands as emotive and enduring as Tunng don’t come around too often. Across their decade together, the group have honed their pastoral pop to perfection, winning over audiences and critics one rustic twang of guitar, icy electronic echo and sumptuous whisper of vocals at a time to become one of Britain’s most championed underground forces – fitting for an act who began literally underground, in the basement of a Soho women’s clothing boutique some ten years ago.

Now their success story is set to continue with the release of fifth studio album Turbines on June 18th on Full Time Hobby in America, their most bewitching and brilliant listen yet. “It’s been a twisted adventure to this point, one that has taken us all over the world, an amazing journey,” grins instrumentalist and founding member Mike Lindsay. As the band has evolved and grown, so too has its members. “There’s a lot happened in this band in the last couple of years” he adds. “Children born, people moving into different places, falling in love, skipping country, broadening horizons… maybe this is a coming-of-age record!”

Recorded mainly in a Dorset studio this is the first Tunng album where all six members were more or less all present at each stage of the recording process. Bar an excursion to album engineer and vintage equipment expert Ben ‘Benge’ Edwards’ “synth museum” to add electronic embellishments. It’s an album rich in colour and emotion, from the geyser-like organ eruptions of By This to the trip-hop grooves and thunderous timpani of Trip Trap and Heavy Rock Warning. “I remember thinking that this album would go full circle and match the first record in its experimentalism. But that didn’t happen.” Instead came Tunng’s most direct and affecting effort to date. “It’s more concise,” says Winter. “It’s just the essentials, delivered straight.”

“It’s our sci-fi folk rock album,” declares Lindsay, who stresses the key to Turbines’ enchanting charm is the sense of family among its creators. “We have been through a lot together, seen some amazing places and some pretty bad places too… and it’s time to see some more!”

Singer-songwriter Kyle Andrews is still intent on making everyone smile – and thus he announces the release of his next album, Brighter Than The Sun July 23rd via his own Elephant Lady Records imprint. He has several deliriously catchy albums under his belt and has become best known for his 2010 hit “You Always Make Me Smile.” The song was featured in a worldwide ad campaign and the video garnered 2.2+ million views & was shot during an attempt to make the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest water balloon fight.

Brighter Than The Sun is a pulsating fun-inducing pop album. “Looking Up” is so funky you can’t help but bounce to the feel-good bass line. Laced with synth, dark dancefloor banger, “Crystal Ball” showcases Andrews’ more musically aggressive side. “The Way To Wonder” begins with light acoustic-guitar strumming and handclaps, quickly building up to an epic climax. ‘

Drawing inspiration from society’s inclination towards the technological, Kyle is no stranger to the innovative – he uses everything from built-in lap-top mics to top-of-the line studio set-ups to compose and record his tunes. Stay tuned for more innovative, infectious tunes & news coming soon!
