Words by Nicole Calascibetta

The first time I listened to Mitchell Grey was about a year ago when they opened at Mexcali Live. Almost a year later, Mitchell Grey debuted their first record titled On The Stellar Way.

The first thing I noticed about this album was the same as my first thought when I saw Mitchell Grey live.

These boys have soul.

I recently caught up with band members Ryan, Joseph, Napon and Matt to talk about the development of their record and what the future plans are for Mitchell Grey.

Working with San Diego producer Jesse Barrera, Mitchell Grey released On The Stellar Way this past April. When I asked about the various influences of pop, R&B and alternative rock heard on this album they described how almost every member of the band was an individual singer/songwriter at some point and that their different music influences were blended together to create their dynamic. Drummer, Matt Pana went on to explain that his constant change of back-up drumming for different artists allowed him to bring his various influences to their sound as well.

Ryan, Joseph, Napon and Matt met over a span of 3-4 years from playing in different bands and meeting at open mics. Eventually these boys came together to form Mitchell Grey and collaborated with other musicians – such as Tori Kelly (Vocals) and Allan Ladean (Keyboard) – to create the rich and soulful album On The Stellar Way.

So what’s next?

Next week the boys will start working on their first official music video for “Heartstrings”. And while they’re out promoting On The Stellar Way they’ve already written six more songs for their next record.

You can catch Mitchell Grey touring the east coast this summer and for those in the New York area, Mitchell Grey is performing Tuesday, June 19th at The Cake Shop in NYC for New Music Seminar.

You can stream On The Stellar Way through Spotify or download it from either Itunes or www.mitchellgreymusic.com.
