The Chameleon Club
To try to explain HogMaw’s sound with a single word is an impossible task. Sure they have a traditional Bluegrass swagger, but bluegrass just isn’t big enough to contain their sound. Add the title jam band, call them progressive, and you’re a bit closer, and be aware that they rock the f**k out.” –Jonathan Hunt, TriState Indie
What started as an accidental meeting of musicians around a campfire has become a progressive bluegrass bomb that has exploded on the festival scene in the North East. By playing original music in an innovative style that is both experimental and familiar, HogMaw has quickly gained a reputation as something that you have to see first hand.
In only 2 short years together HogMaw’s resume includes over 20 festival appearances and nearly 100 total performances. These include major musical events such as DelFest in Cumberland MD, Camp Jam in the Pines in Monroeville NJ, and Allentown, PA’s Musikfest. They have opened for National acts such as jamgrass powerhouses Cornmeal and the Hackensaw Boys. They have also had many headlining performances of their own at major hot spots for original music such as the Mermaid Inn, Tin Angel, and North Star Bar in Philadelphia, and the Chameleon Club in Lancaster PA. The band headlined the 2010 Bucks Co. Bluegrass Festival at Snipe’s Farm in Morrisville, Pa and also won the 2009 York Revolution Battle of the Bands where they played for a full stadium of 7000.
At it’s core the band travels as a nimble 3 piece of Matt Baldwin on guitar and vocals, multi-instrumentalist Colin Reeves on mandolin, banjo, dobro, manjo (combination banjo mandolin), and occasional guitar, and Ryann Lynch on fiddle and foot percussion. Like many traveling trios a supporting bass player or other musical guest can be added depending on the need.
Grass roots support from an ever growing fan base has helped spread the word about HogMaw far beyond the band’s geographic reach. Through a fan supported donation based FREE CD project HogMaw has distributed nearly 1000 CD’s of their live performances to fans that have attended their shows.
Each fan is encouraged to “Please Copy and Distribute”, and an alarming number have done just that. Fans responded in a big way, spreading CD’s to at least 4 different Continents, the Hawaiian Islands, both coasts of the continental USA, and Canada. HogMaw also encourages recording of their live shows and have posted many hours of free music online. Fans interested in downloading music or donating to the project can find information at www.hogmawband.net.
