Ben Folds won by three votes today. Three. Huh? Alright Ben Folds. The North Carolina piano dweeb has upset the Canadian indie rock collective Arcade Fire by the slimmest of margins. The (9) seed Ben Folds moves on to the Swell 16 in a stunning fashion. So as of right now, only 2 of the original 4 (1) seeds remain in the tournament. After the second round! Everyone beware that tomorrow, both the “Swell 16″ and “Elusive 8″ match-ups will take place. Be sure to grab your brackets, if you haven’t already yet, here: http://ynotradio.net/
Ben Folds is rolling hot after the extra-narrow win over Arcade Fire. Tomorrow, he has his hands full with Billy Corrigan and Smashing Pumpkins who enjoyed a little bigger margin of victory over Garbage today 58%-4%. Will the dude that plays chat roulette during live shows overcome the pained poetry and powerful guitars of Smashing Pumpkins? We shall see!
Bravo LCD Soundsystem! Bravo! Today, in the band’s second upset in a row, the recently retired LCD Soundsystem took the victory over (2) seed The Clash 53%-47%. Tomorrow they face Trent Reznor’s brainchild Nine Inch Nails. Will the haunting lyricism and tortured instrumentation of Nine Inch Nails overcome the often tung-and-cheek style of LCD Soundsystem prove victorious? Check it out tomorrow to see!
Spoon ended Lykke Li’s dance today as voters decided they’d rather see Britt Daniel and company in the “Swell 16.” Tomorrow they match-up with Pearl Jam. In the match between indie rock mainstays and grunge legends, I have no idea who voters will favor. Each band is great, and I can really understand why one would vote for either. With Pearl Jam, you get all the sweet guitars and epic grunge voice that you can handle. With Spoon, you get a band that simply makes good music consistently, whether it’s in the form of “The Way We Get By,” or “Written in Reverse,” this band just doesn’t make bad music. We’ll see who listeners prefer tomorrow.
Florence & The Machine saw some great success today again as she beat the Kooks by the margin of 66%-34%. Tomorrow, she faces They Might Be Giants who have dabbled in children’s music, indie rock, and some sort of joke rock. They always have retained cred as a serious band, as this tournament shows, and by all means, they are a serious contender. The epic pop-ness of Florence Welch’s music will provide a great match-up with the overall buoyancy of They Might Be Giants.
The Flaming Lips continued their roll when they took it to Vampire Weekend today. Tomorrow, they’ll see the Silversun Pickups in a bout that pits alternative rock’s best with any type of music’s weirdest. Of course, not all of The Flaming Lips is crazy experimenting, as they did do “Do You Realize,” and “Waitin’ On a Superman,” two (relatively) straightforward pop songs that are awesome. Silversun Pickups did do “Panic Switch,” and who could forget “Lazy Eye?” I wonder who will come out on top of this match.
