Round two of Y-Not Radio and iRadioPhilly’s ‘Modern Rock Madness’ concluded today with some unexpected results.

The day started off with a match between Radiohead and TV On The Radio. The face-off ended as one might expect, with first-seed band Radiohead  coming out on top of TV On The Radio by 42 percent of the vote. They will be playing against The Cure tomorrow after their victory over Nirvana by six percent.

Arcade+Fire+375185Though Cold War Kids had an impressive victory on Monday against the much higher-seeded The Clash, they couldn’t keep it up today in their match against R.E.M. R.E.M. finished the round 18 percent ahead of CWK. They will battle Arcade Fire, who defeated Cake today by 32 percent, tomorrow.

The Pixies pulled off an unexpected victory against first-seed artist Jack White/The White Stripes today. They will be going up against Beck, who narrowly won against The Decemberists by only two percent of the vote.

Even though their two huge names in music, David Bowie upset The Beastie Boys by 12 percent. Ziggy will be paired up against Nada Surf after their second upset against Spoon/Divine Fits by six percent. After their victory against the Foo Fighters on Monday, Nada Surf is clearly a strong contender and will give Bowie a run for his money.

The Black Keys came out with only six percent more of the vote than (the) Ben Folds (Five) after a tie breaker round and will be going on to the next round to clash with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who won against Matt and Kim by 36 percent in this round.

The sixth round of the “Swell 16” will pit Modest Mouse against the Silversun Pickups. Both bands caused impressive upsets today after Modest Mouse defeated Nine Inch Nails by a mere two percent and Silversun Pickups beat Muse by 14 percent of the vote.

Tegan+and+Sara+Brooks+Reynolds+Photography+02Another first-seed band, Blur/Gorillaz (who were also last years Modern Rock Madness victors), was eliminated today by four percent of the vote after competing against Tegan and Sara. The girls will have to win against The Strokes if they want to continue into the “Elusive Eight” tomorrow. The Strokes knocked out Smashing Pumpkins today by eight percent.

After Garbage and Santigold both caused upsets yesterday, Garbage against Phoenix and Santigold against Vampire Weekend, it was hard to tell which of the victorious underdogs would come out on top today. In the end, though, Garbage ran away with the crowd, winning by 22 percent of the vote. They will be trying to stand their ground against Death Cab For Cutie/Postal Service after their win against Metric today by 12 percent.

So, in conclusion, the following bands are still in the running for Modern Rock Madness (their seed is listed next to them):

Division 1:
(1) Radiohead vs. (4) The Cure
(6) R.E.M vs. (2) Arcade Fire
Division 2:
(8) Pixies vs. (4) Beck
(6) David Bowie vs. (15) Nada Surf
Division 3:
(1) The Black Keys vs. (4) Yeah Yeah Yeahs
(6) Modest Mouse vs. (7) Silversun Pickups
Division 4:
(8) Tegan and Sara vs. (5) The Strokes

A lot of great match-ups for tomorrow and as of right now, it’s still anyone’s game so keep posted for more results!
