I’ll never forget Gathering of the Vibes 2014, and my favorite set there – STS9. I’ll never forget Hulaween 2015, from which I just returned. The closing set of the festival – STS9. These guys are among the very best jamtronica bands performing today. And when they pack the new Fillmore Philadelphia with real fans that project good vibes in all directions, and play a combination of their classic favorites and crowd pleasers like an instrumental “We Are Family,” it doesn’t get much better. Everybody played well, but I have to give a special shout out to Alana Rocklin, who absolutely threw down some of the most original funk baselines I’ve heard, and from a band that only plays a few hard funk numbers in a night. Except when the opener is The New Deal, a band that was on hiatus not to long ago, and who I really missed after seeing their last pre-hiatus set on JamCruise. This is the second time I’ve seen them since they’re back on the scene, and this show was way better than the first, ranging from hard dance beats to downtempo chill.
