IKES began his music career at the tender age of 14 as a Garage MC. He honed his musical skills by studying the crafts of some of the greats; such as Tupac, Biggie, Michael Jackson and more. Hailing from the edge of Hackney, Ikes was later signed to Indie label Reignassance, which was also home to such UK names as Chipmunk, Random Impulse and Wizzy Wow at the time.
Featured on Flavour Magazine’s 2010 ‘Hot List’, 2010 saw IKES making huge strides. His mixtape ‘Peer 2 Peer’ received over 10,000 downloads worldwide in two weeks, with the accompanying music videos collectively reaping in a lot of attention online, featured on such platforms as GRM Daily, Jump Off UK, All Hip Hop and OnSMASH. IKES received rave reviews for his ‘Warm Up Session’ on SB.TV, with SB.TV creator Jamal Edwards MBE later picking it to be featured in the company’s Google Chrome advert, broadcasted on television in 2012.
Across the Atlantic, IKES has appeared on two of Virginia’s DJ Infamous’ ‘In the Streets’ mixtapes which also featured such established artists as Drake, Fabolous and The Dream. This lead to IKES collaborating directly with DJ Infamous on ‘The Intermission’ mixtape, released in December 2010.
January 2012 saw Ikes work closely with producer Maleek Berry he had known since University on the release of the EP ‘The Intermission: Last Call’ via iTunes. The project gained IKES a lot of attention, with BBC 1Xtra supporting it’s lead single ‘GirlTalk’, featuring Jermaine Riley and Scorcher, on their BBC Introducing podcast. Prestigious industry magazine Music Week also featured ‘GirlTalk’ in their March edition of ‘Music Week Presents.’
All about his live shows, for the past 3 years Ikes has been performing his sets with a four-piece band. Having recently come off a 5-date college tour in the states, and peaked at #1 on the College Rap radio charts RapAttackLives & Rap Network with last single ‘No Commercial’, Ikes is ready to move his sound into the UK mainstream with the release of new single ‘Pray For Me’ on September 18.
Debuting yesterday on SB.TV, ‘Pray For Me’ serves as the debut offering from UK native recording artist Ikes’ long awaited “Outside|In” project, in which he closely worked with producer ‘One Black Russian’ and Chief Engineer of the production team J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Mr Edward Nixon. The cinematic small screen contribution was directed by Olan Collardy and inspired by the popular British crime drama series ‘Luther’, which features actor Idris Elba.
