It has been tradition at the past few XPoNential Music Festival’s that Central Pa has been represented and this year is no exception. Two great bands, The Stray Birds and The Districts make their festival debut this weekend at Wiggins Park. I caught up with The Districts’ Rob Grote [guitar/vocals] and Braden Lawrence [drums] to discuss their upcoming performance. “I have attended the festival once and never really thought it was a possibility that we would be playing there” said Grote. “It’s just kind of mind boggling and crazy!”
It is certainly quite amazing how this young band from Lititz PA has blown up over the past few months. They have been getting airplay on XPN and have an upcoming August tour that takes them to the country’s mid-section and south before heading back home. They are recording a new album with Bill Moriarity who is a Philly based Producer known also for his work with Dr. Dog and Toy Soldiers. Drummer Braden Lawrence describes their sound as Rock/Blues/Punk with a bit of Folk thrown in and their live shows featuring the stage presence of singer Grote are the stuff of legend. They have been compared to Spoon, The Cold War Kids and the Pixes. The band which also includes Mark Larsen on guitar and Conner Jacobus on Bass, all of whom are recent High School grads is making the move to Philly this summer to concentrate on their music and become part of the burgeoning Philly scene. They play the festival this Friday at 6pm on the Marina Stage at Wiggins Park.
ON THE DL
Before their XPoNential debut, however, our friends at Out of Town Films have put together a “Pop Up” show in the Fishtown neighborhood of Philadelphia tomorrow evening – featuring The Districts. It’ll be a great chance to catch the band in an intimate setting before the fest, all while OOTF is shooting the show for a future video series.
