Last year’s Picnic was a sold-out success! Among the highlights were performances by Nas and Esperanza Spalding – both backed by The Roots – and a show-stopping set by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros just to name a few. The 5th Annual Roots Picnic will surely be one for the record books.
Philadelphia sons, The Roots, are exploding beyond the stratosphere of hip-hop impresarios and joining the ranks among music’s most elite musicians on the scene in years. The Grammy-winners continue to blow minds by blending their unique style with impeccable lyricism and unmatched live performances. Just a couple months ago, the band released their latest album, Undun, which received fanatical and critical acclaim. They are also one of the busiest bands around, and when they’re not performing or in the studio, The Roots can be seen every week night as the house band on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”.
Fresh off his collaboration with producer Dot Da Genius, Kid Cudi released WZRD to fan and critical excitement – as it shows the essence of why everyone loves this alt hip-hop artist – Cudi is not afraid to take creative leaps of faith. And that goes for his albums and live performances. Since jumping on the scene, Cudi is no stranger to genre-hopping collaborations – working with the likes of Ratatat, St. Vincent, Travis Barker, Steve Aoki, Kanye West, Common and David Guetta to name a few.
New York trio De La Soul changed the landscape of hip-hop as we know it, and have paved the way for contemporary artists in and outside of their genre. Using light rhythm, social commentary, whimsically irreverent lyrics and vast samplings, De La Soul are musical innovators at the very core.
April 2, 2011 at Madison Square Garden may have marked the final show for LCD Soundsystem, but there is no stopping James Murphy – the creative genius behind one of the most celebrated and innovatively influential bands of our generation. The multi-talented Murphy, who can add DJ, musician, producer and record label co-founder to his resume – just to name a few – will certainly be a ‘can’t miss’ at this year’s Roots Picnic!
Since first breaking out and breaking ground in 2005, Wale has put out two albums, hit after hit and worked with some of music’s biggest names including Lady GaGa, Kanye West, TV on the Radio, Lily Allen and Mark Ronson just to name a few. The rapper/MC is all about breaking the barriers of music and continues to do so on his sophomore album Ambition, which came out in 2011.
In previous years, performers at The Roots Picnic have included: The Black Keys, John Legend, members of Wu Tang Clan, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend, Public Enemy, Santigold, Gnarls Barkley, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings and many more.
