One of the wonderful things about attending a great music festival is not just seeing anticipated sets by bands you are familiar with but of course discovering a great band for the first time.Lexington Ky./D.C. newcomers[not really, four years and four albums]These United States was my nice surprise on Sunday. This quintet led by Jesse Elliott  plays guitar driven American rock and roll with just the right amount of tortured electric piano and soaring pedal steel thrown in for good measure.Think a  dirtier and more upbeat Son Volt or late era Byrds after a long night.Their fourth album “What Lasts” recorded at the Sound Mine in East Stroudsburg Pa. and features Dawn Landes[Hem veteran and Mrs. Josh Ritter] on one track was released today. They are on tour in support of the record crisscrossing the part of the country between Chicago and the west coast more times than seems humanly possible in the next month. They play Lollapalooza and play dates with Langhorne Slim ,Fruit Bats, and Deer Tick. Also a quick nod to the rest of the band J.Tom Hnatow on Pedal and Guitar,Robbie Cosenza  on Drums,Justin Craig on Guitar and Keys and flannel shirt wearing bassist Collin Kellogg.See them if you get the chance, listen to the songs for sure.
