The free fest tickets that freed out in minutes were definitely worth snagging. Headliners such as Robin Thicke, Vampire Weekend, and MGMT played deep into the muddy, rainy night.
They say if you can get people dancing before noon, you’re good. Ghost Beach started early but they definitely brought the energy. They played all the hits and a bunch of songs from the new album set to drop next year. Check out our interview with Ghost Beach at the fest HERE!
The Knocks playing basically the same time, did a bunch of my favorites followed by an edit of M83’s “Midnight City.” Thankfully, Sky Ferreira made it out of jail just in time to perform at Free Fest. She came out in a Megadeath tee with leather shorts, red lipstick, and rocked some pretty impressive hickeys on her neck. She set the bar pretty high in the beginning of the day with her soft grunge sound.
Icona Pop really brought the energy. This was one of my favorite performances. They played a bunch of hits like “I Love It” and “Ready For The Weekend.” Their second album, “This is…Icona Pop” is due to drop this month.
Kaskade was a pleasure to watch as he performed for the crowd who didn’t seem to mind the rain and mud during his set. Robin Thicke performed with a full band and 3 sassy dancers, although none of them twerking. He waited till the end of his set to perform his hit, “Blurred Lines” and ended with him and his dancers taking a bow while he causally rapped over Kanye West’s, “Clique.”
MGMT proved to be another treat, performing my personal favorite, “Weekend Wars.”
Vampire Weekend closed out the night with a great set and a beautiful backdrop. They played all the favorites like “A-Punk” “Horchata” “California English” and “Holiday”. Poncho or not, I think it’s safe to say that everybody had a great time.
