The third and final day of WXPN’s Non-Comm closed out with a bang, and another impressive line-up. Showing the true diversity only found on Non-Comm stations. We saw a collection of Blues, Rock, Country, and of course some Surf Rock.
After a morning of meeting and discussions, we were treated to a pretty special Free at Noon featuring Calexico and the legend that is Brian Wilson. It was a perfect sunny day to listen to some classic Beach Boy tunes, along with some of the more recent work from Brian Wilson.
Taking a break between the performances of the day, we attended the annual “Music Meeting”. Where tastemakers and XPN listeners from all around gathered to listen and rate some of the possibly top up and coming songs for the rest of the year. General consensus was nothing solid, as it further proved everyone has different tastes and respects for different music.
The music showcases started off a little lack luster, but started to pick-up with the sights of the adorable Madisen Ward & The Mama Bear, recently named one of the top Country acts to look out for by Rolling Stone. They also dedicated their set to the late and great B.B. King, who’s death was announced the night before. Natalie Prass gave a touching performance, with the likes of Ryan Adams hanging around side-stage. Transporting us to another time, Leon Bridges amazed the crowd upstairs with his impressive crooner vocals and sharp dress. We know this guy is going to go far, with his unique sense of something in the past and present times. Followed by another impressive set from Tallest Man on Earth, who knew just how to play the crowd and introduce us to some of the new material.
All things stop when we get to Anderson East’s set. A true performer, and one of the most energetic sets of Non-Comm, Anderson wasn’t afraid to get up on the tables (literally) and make sure everyone was having a great time. I’m just going to say he probably wins for best Non-Comm performance. Finishing off the Commvention was Israel Nash, with one of the only hour long sets.
